Comics Go To Hell HC

Description

Satan. The Devil. Lucifer. Beelzebub. The Prince of Evil. He goes by many names, and there are just as many ways of viewing this symbol of all that is immoral, depraved and destructive. Since the Devil is one of the oldest and strongest of all the icons in the history of human civilization, it should come as no surprise that the Devil is a recurring figure in comics, a medium built upon the iconic nature of images. This book, from the author of BLACK IMAGES IN THE COMICS, examines how cartoonists around the world and throughout the ages have appropriated and played around with the myths surrounding the Devil. Chapters include "Old Devils" (how medieval illustrators viewed the Devil); "The Devil You Say" (different versions of the Devil); "Superdevils" (the Devil in superhero comics); "The Devil in Us All" (cartoonists using the Devil's attributes to suggest evil among mere mortals); "Funny Devils" (playing evil for comedy); and more. Even dyed-in-the wool comics aficionados will be amazed at some of the more controversial, ridiculous, and just plain bizarre incarnations of the ultimate evil found herein.
