German folktales are some of the most well-known and well-loved tales of all times. Most of them evolved over the years from early ballads and stories that Germanic tribes created about their gods and heroes.

Later, fables and folktales became a popular means of teaching practical wisdom, as can be seen in the often told story of Reynard the fox who flattered Chauntecleer the rooster into closing his eyes and singing before catching him.

The greatest contribution to German folktales came from two brothers, Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm, who collected and put together in a book 210 German folk and fairy tales. The most famous of these include Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella, and Little Red Riding Hood.

This collection has stories from the German-speaking regions of Europe. It includes the adventures of a swineherd prince, it tells of the clever artisans of Schielda, and of Jorinda and Jorindel. Also included is a German folktale which has been adapted to an Indian setting - it proves the universal acceptability and adaptability of these stories.
